Gorgeous Q: How To Be A Good Emcee

A reader sent a question that is very timely this Holiday season.

Sender’s name : jhaz

hi

would like to ask if you have ideas or tips on how to be a good and funny host of a party. or do you have any videos too?

we will be having our company xmas party this saturday dec 11 and it will be my first time to host such event.

can you help me please?! i’m too nervous.

thank you!

I’m super sorry to Jhaz who sent me this question a week ago, I wasn’t able to see it in time to reply and I think your party is over.  But just in case you get invited to do an emceeing gig again here’s some pointers you could use:

  1. Do your homework and research about the event, the people and the company you are emceeing for. It will be easier for you to ingest trivia questions and information in a funny way if you know what you are talking about.  Know what’s allowed and what’s not allowed to say regarding company information especially if there are outsiders invited to the party.
  2. Prepare some cue cards to guide you on the flow of the event and your spills/script. This is to make sure that the event goes according to the program and that you won’t miss anything  out.
  3. Practice in front of the mirror or if you have a video cam practice on cam and see where your rough edges are and correct them. This will help you if you need to moderate your voice if you have a high pitch voice, minimize your hand gestures if you do it a lot, and minimize fidgeting if you are prone to wink a lot when speaking in front of an audience.
  4. Connect with your audience. Make sure you involve the audience if you are about to deliver a long speech or introduction.  Instead of reading a boring company profile or info about your boss address it like you are giving a trivia or a pop quiz that you answer yourself.  Example:  ”Who blogged about a funny cat who was hot and bothered one day and now has the term hot and bothered on her top 10 keyword search?”
  5. Wear something comfortable not just fashionable. Make sure you wear something comfortable as you will be moving and talking a lot when you host an event.  People will see your uneasiness if you wear uncomfortable clothings. This will affect your performance as a host too.
  6. Don’t forget to Smile and enjoy what you do! No matter how nervous you are if you pack a lot of humor on your side and put on your best smile people will enjoy looking at you and listening to every word you say!

I hope these pointers will help you out in future events.  These tips are based on experience as I’ve hosted a lot of events in the past.   But if our readers have something else to share it will be much welcomed.

Stay gorgeous everyone!

Introductions (New [old] Recruit: LodRose)

I’m Earth’s elder sister.

While Earth was doing number two this morning, I asked her to give me a login and just now to give me contributing rights to her blog. Then I twiddled my thumbs and here i am :)

I’ve assisted laying the outlines for the traumatic Air Philippines incident. I am also sampling the goodies that come her way, even attend some of her events. But I’ve long been in the sidelines sharing my thoughts, ideas and comments for some of Earth’s posts and long term plans for the blog. When I woke up this morning with all my day job, school work and other projects, I had thought blogging for her officially would be a sensible first step on taking this blog and my writing addiction to the next level.

You can find out more about me through my very own about page (http://lodrose.wordpress.com/about/) but please watch out for me from hereon as I will make this my blogging home squatting at my sister’s domain (it is a given that she’ll have me heeheehee). That other site will remain up but serve as my catch-all in case I need to spit out stuff that will not contribute here anyway.

I’m thrilled and look forward to picking everyone’s brains out.  I’ll be writing mostly about:

- Business
- Technology
- Travel, Tourism & Culture
- Advocacies, Volunteering & Philantrophy
- Overseas Filipino Workers and Local Communities

Cheers.

(Earthlingorgeous Note: There you go my sister bullied me into making her part of my blog and hopefully she will post lots about the things she mentioned above.  She writes well than me too, and I need someone who can blog for me when I’m busy hahaha!  Now I have someone who will do it for free!  Awesome!  Stay gorgeous everyone!)

How Was Singapore?

A few weeks ago a number of Filipino blogger friends were flown to Singapore to witness the first Asian Blog Awards, they stayed there for 3 days and 2 nights.  Based on the photos they published they looked like they had a great time especially with the free  accommodations and breakfast during they stay.

I was just wondering if the service provided to them by the hotel staff and the restaurants they went to were as picture perfect as I perceived it to be?  If it was I think the good experience they have is worth sharing. But if it wasn’t then people should be forewarned.

Are You Being Served? is a website where people all over the world can share their Singapore customer service experience whether it be good or bad. The site aims to expose everything good or bad about this country so help them improve in any way they can.

Was food really expensive in Singapore? Was the country as clean as they said it was? How was the transportation service there? Were there any rude drivers? Did you purchase a gadget that got broken days after? Share it, they will gladly publish your stories.

However, if you do not want your name or photos to be shown in this site, you can ask their “squad members” to check out the places you visited so they can experience first hand whatever kind of customer service you had. Or you can suggest a certain customer service scenario on a specific place and see how the staff reacts so they can blog about it.

Getting Excited About The Boracay Trip

Two months from now my family and I will be spending the New Year in Boracay and I can’t contain my excitement. In fact I bought some swimsuit for me and my daughter to wear on that trip. I even had my daughter do some dress rehearsal for me with her swimsuit, she looks so adorable.

We will be staying at an oceanfront resort in Boracay popularly known as the Station 1 so it’s great. It’s like the accommodations they have at the Oceanfront Hotel Myrtle Beach. As soon as you step out of the hotel you are at the beach front already.

I bet my daughter will really enjoy this trip. I am excited about taking nice pictures of her with the sand and the sea and do some nice poses like I was at Myrtle Beach Resort.

Well honestly I believe the Philippine beaches are the best in the world. If you know a Resort in Myrtle Beach most of our beaches here looked like that all year round.

We only have two types of weather here rain and sun. Our temperature at the beach never goes down below zero the coldest would be 16 degrees which I bet is tolerable for people in the Western country experiencing snow.

My Daughter Wants A Trip To The Beach

My daughter was scavenging through my files and saw a leaflet of Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotel and she looked very interested.  She handed it to me and pointed the clouds, the beach umbrella and the,  deep blue ocean view.

I asked her “you want to go to the beach?”  She laughed and jumped like she was so excited.  I couldn’t stop bug hug her tight and told her. “Soon we will be going to the beach, let”s wait when Tita is here OK?”  The she kissed the leaflet hand it back to me and walked away.

Well, the family already booked a New Year trip to Boracay and although it’s not the Myrtle Beach Hotel my daughter was eying, I’m sure my daughter will still enjoy it, especially the white sand that surrounds the island.   She definitely enjoy all activities we will have there.

We will be staying in one of the resorts at Station 1 and the facilities are as grand as what is available at the condo rooms that can be found at the  Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotel
