Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Starting from the top-notch chocolate movie – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a bomb among all the films for younger audiences. It’s the reproduction of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) based on the book written by the Welsh-Norwegian author Roald Dahl (1964). Dahl is well known for his eccentricity and fascinating stories.

The plot of the movie focuses on the poor Bucket’s family living in the suburbs of the town, which used to be famous for its huge chocolate factory.

One day, the eccentric factory owner, Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp), decides to reopen the chocolate industry back again. Charlie is one of the five children who find a golden ticket in a bar of chocolate – an official invitation for the grand opening of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Accompanied by spoiled, rude kids from wealthy families, Charlie embarks on the journey to a totally different world; the journey that can change his whole life.

Chocolat

Apparently, Johnny Depp is a great fan of chocolate because he stars in the second chocolate-based movie on our list. Chocolat is described as a “fairy tale for adults” set in the French countryside towards the tail end of the 1950s. Vianne Rocher (Julietta Binoche) decides to open a chocolate store in a small, conservative village and faces difficulties.

Running a chocolate business in such a small place is not a piece of cake. Vianne needs to handle many problems, such as persuading insecure, intolerant locals to her store, conflicts with the mayor, and dealing with a group of nomads, including Vagant Roux (Johnny Depp). Soon the situation turns into a real chocolate temptation, mixed with just a little bit of magic.

Like Water for Chocolate

The movie takes place in Mexico before the revolution of 1910. It’s a romantic story between Tita and Pedro, who are insanely in love but unable to get married.

Tita’s mother chose her to be the one to take care of her at an older age. The forbidden love ends up painfully, and Pedro decides to marry an older sister – Rosaura. Tita is forced to become a cook when suddenly she finds out her unusual gift – she can express feelings through food.

The feeling does not only affect Pedro but everyone who tries her chocolate cakes. Such a mix of uncontrolled emotions turns into a fantastic twist.

Romantics Anonymous

It’s a French-Belgium romantic comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Améris and starring Benoît Poelvoorde and Isabelle Carré. Jean-Rene owns a small chocolate factory, and Angelique is a very talented chocolatier who suffers from anxiety and ends up as a sales representative in Jean’s place. When she realizes the factory suffers real financial problems, she helps other employees create a totally new line of chocolate to improve the quality of the products and the brand’s opinion. Same time Jean-Rene and Angelique fall in love, but because of the anxiety and both characters’ complex personalities, they find it very hard to express their feelings.

Chocolate Aspects in Other Movies

There may not be a lot of movies based mainly on chocolate, but there are plenty of films that sneak in some of the chocolate aspects. Have you ever noticed it?

Let’s take a look at a classic Harry Potter. One of the leading sweet treasures in the magic world is a chocolate frog they pointed to a few times in the movie. It was also the best’ cure’ after the Death Eaters attack. Professor Rupin gives it to Harry right after his first meeting with the soldiers of Azkaban.

Bridget Jones always eats out her depression with a box of chocolate Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Chandler from Friends can be found much more often drinking chocolate milk than a beer or even coffee. Chocolate is present in many movie productions. It’s simply a part of the culture.

The Bottom Line

Chocolate is not only a pleasure for taste, but it can lead you much further. With its long history, easy access, and medical benefits (chocolate increases endorphin levels), cocoa beans have reached great popularity. People create chocolate museums, chocolate-based festivals, Belgian chocolate express trains and cars, chocolate fashion shows, and more. Grab some chocolate and enjoy a special treat this evening!
