Hosting a dinner party for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. Buying and preparing the food, acting as host or hostess, deciding on the entertainment for the evening, it can all be quite daunting if you have never done it before. But actually, a dinner party can be a lovely way of getting together with friends and family, enjoying an informal evening together and chatting and socialising as a small group. If you are thinking of holding a dinner party for the first time then you will understandably be nervous, but by following a few simple tips you can make sure your evening goes well.
When you are thinking about your evening, do:
Plan well in advance. It’s all about writing lots of lists and being hyper organised – so you need to know exactly who’s coming, what you’re cooking and what your preparation and cooking times are. Do your shopping in advance, so the food is still lovely and fresh but you aren’t panicking your way round the supermarket at the last minute.
Consider your presentation. Simple, elegant, tasteful presentation is far better than an over-the-top table. Look at everything from your tablecloths designs to your centrepiece and cutlery to make sure it’s all in good order for your guests. You could also prepare a seating plan to make sure everyone is seated in the best way to offer flowing conversation.
Ask about dietary requirements. That lovely rare steak will not appeal to a vegetarian and guests with allergies or intolerances may feel awkward telling you on the evening. Of course, you may already know if your friends or family members have specific requirements, but anyone bringing a new partner, for example, may not think to let you know in advance. Simply ask upfront if anyone needs anything special preparing.
Invest in a timer. Time everything precisely and carefully, whether it’s cooking or chilling, to give you some peace of mind.
Enjoy yourself! Remember this is your evening and the whole point is to relax in good company. No-one will mind if not everything is perfect.
Don’t:
Invite too many people. Careful selection of your guests will mean everyone can enjoy a small, intimate dinner party. Too many people will start to panic you in terms of shopping and cooking and can feel much less personal.
Have the kids around. If you have children popping in and out of the kitchen every five minutes they will drive you mad. Prepare their food earlier (if they aren’t eating with you) and ask them to leave you in peace while you’re cooking. Pets should also be kept well out of the way.
Create too much clutter. Try to wash up and put away as you go along, otherwise you will find it difficult trying to prepare, cook and serve up in an increasingly busy kitchen. Make sure your fridge and oven are clean in advance and the work surfaces are clear.
A little careful planning goes a long way and you will soon be hosting dinner parties with ease and confidence.
