Fight Against Poor Grammar

I stumbled upon this group in Facebook today and I can’t help but raise my brows. I do not undermine its cause especially if it focuses on improving the usage of the language by professional writers. My English is not flawless and I would wish to improve. It is true that the net-speak and the text-language has degraded English speaking people’s grammar. But then again what fun would this net world be, since it appears to me it focus on those who publish via internet, especially blogs like this, if there would be someone criticizing you or even to the point of crucifying you for your wrong grammar in your posts.

What is important I think is that instead of being overly sensitive or perfectionist about the English language usage a better cause would be to eradicate illiteracy. English usage is not the problem but the number of illiterate people in the world. If there are less uneducated people in the world, there would be less poverty, I think. Education is the key.

Those who created this group is arrogant and I agree with a comment in that group too. It just shows how some would rather find fault in others than find what is good. An example was another post from that group from someone who is not a native English-speaking person, some of the members ganged-up on her, like she had committed felony.

English is not the only language spoken and used in the world, there are so many language spoken. In German the Germans don’t use English so much and require expatriates to learn the language or anyone who would want to work and live there. Same as in Japan, they also require people who will live in their country to speak Japanese (Nihonggo? someone correct me about this if you like).

Those who know how to speak and write the English language flawlessly are arrogant. Leave the net alone except for those who are in the profession of writing and those who are paid to publish their work. They should have flawless copy. The rest let them be. The internet was created to be accessible for everyone to enjoy, learn and whatever they wish to do with it. Don’t be so tight or if you will be go through your copy first and make sure you don’t have a single mistake even in the usage of comma’s parenthesis and spelling. Practice what you preach.

For those who want to improve on their English language skills here is a useful free website you can visit and learn: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/index.htm. They have a number of topics there and even quizzes you can use and see your deficiency and improve.
