What Does it Take to Lose Weight and Keep It Off?

When it comes to losing weight, the equation is simple: the number of calories in must be less than number of calories out. In order to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit that will require you body to use stored calories to power the body. And, while many people are aware that a calorie deficit is required in order to lose weight, many don’t know what the best way is to create it. Diet plans are designed to give you a road map to follow that creates the calorie deficit necessary to lose weight while teaching you a better way of eating that helps you keep it off. Here is a guide to some of the more popular weight loss plans.

Weight Watchers

Weight watchers has been around for quite some time. Weight Watchers works by assigning a simple to follow points system that allows people to monitor what they eat and create the calorie deficit they need to lose weight. Weight Watchers uses a proprietary system that assigns points values to all foods based on the nutritional content of the food. When a person has eaten their allotted number of points, they stop eating for the day.

NutriSystem

Nutrisystem works on much the same principle that Weight Watchers does, however they take simplicity to a whole new level by providing prepackaged meals to dieters. By controlling what you eat through a prepackaged food system, you create the necessary calorie deficit and lose weight.

Atkins Diet

In the Atkins diet, the philosophy emphasizes the type of calories being eaten over how many. Many believe that you can eat as much as you want on the Atkins diet and still lose weight as long as those calories do not contain carbs. However, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. The truth is that while the Atkins diet appear to be more forgiving when it comes to the number of calories being, the truth is that protein contains fewer calories than carbohydrates, so the dieter may feel as though they are eating more, but in reality, they are eating less calorie dense foods, so the volume of food can increase while continuing to maintain the necessary calorie deficit for weight loss.

In addition to following a weight loss plan, a calorie deficit can be created by exercise as well. As a matter of fact, most people who are successful in losing weight and keeping it off long term combine eating fewer calories with burning more calories through exercise. Not only does exercise help with weight loss but also has a positive impact on many other health conditions.
