Philips Gives a Glimpse of the Future Landscape of Lighting with OLED Technology

Imagine if you are away from home but still be able to open the lights there with just a swipe of your cellphone?  Imagine your lighting can notify you of whether or not it will rain?

I know that sounds awesome. I have to apologize for the poor photos you are about to see, these photos does not give justice to what I saw at the Philips LEDiscovery (LED Discovery) event where Philips gave us an amazing glimpse of the future landscape of lighting all over the world.

Philips showcased on a mini exhibit of the six innovation concepts that embody the future of lighting — Flexibility, Controllability, Alternative Energy, Connectivity, Dynamism and Materials Integration.  According to Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, Country Manager of Philips Philippines the above concepts address the need for more energy-efficient lighting , shifting to LEDs and controls from old inefficient lighting that can result to 85% more saving for consumers.

Flexibility
Under the concept of Flexibility lies the technology of OLEDs or organic light-emitting diodes – the banner lighting systems of Philips.  OLEDs are surface light sources — like wallpaper, ceilings and windows– that shine brightly with daylight even when it is dark.  These glare-free lights have glass plate assemblies that can be seamlessly integrated into installations.

Just like this Philips LivingShapes interactive mirror, which is made up of dozens of Lumiblade OLEDs that emit light when it is turned on and appear as mirror when turned off.

Another one is the Philips LivingSculptures that lets designers orchestrate three-dimensional arrays of OLED in open spaces like ceilings and walls — adding a sense of movement to any surface, as multiple light panels rhythmically move and illuminate to create interactive displays.

Controllability
Under Controlability is a technology called Philips Antumbra, the Antumbra Panel Series is described as the new benchmark for user control panels, engineered for high-end residential and hospitality switches.  It has a sensor that can sense if there’s human presence or not. The switch lights up so if in-case it is dark you won’t have problem finding the switch.

Alternative Energy
Philips Mobile Solar LED Lighting system store energy from the sun during daytime, so that they are able to provide illumination at night. These modules are also commonly used in street and road lighting. Perfect for areas that have limited access to power

Connectivity
Just like I mentioned earlier, imagine if you can turn-on your lights at home even if you are away! Philips Hue is an innovation that lets you create and personalize light through an app — letting you pick a wide spectrum of shades to set the mood and feel of your living space. Hue can also alert you of your schedule, incoming email or even warn you if it will rain.

Dynamism
Philips Color Kinetics are dazzling light installations whice are used in over 34,000 iconic spectacles across 100 countries — including England’s coveted London Eye and New York’s Empire State Building.

Materials Integration
Philips LED lighting systems can also be integrated with superior sound absorption to enhance room interiors or create the ideal setting for the workplace. Just like the Philips Soundlight Comfort Ceiling (SLCC) and Philips Luminous Textile Panels (LTP)

With what I saw at the LEDiscovery event the future is definitely fun and bright!  I can’t wait to see a pilot city or establishment here in the Philippines.
