In a perfect world where we all have cars, there is no flooding, the weather is not hot and humid and everything we want is at arms reach we could wear anything we want. But since we don’t live in a perfect world we need to adopt to our environment.
Here are some tips on weathering the rainy weather in style!
Footwear:
1) Rainy season is a time when footwear takes a beating. It’s best to have a rubber boots as high as your knees if you are commuting. It will not only save your feet to contact possible skin diseases with the rain/flood water but you will also save your precious shoes or sandals.
2) Bring a flip flops with you to keep your feet dry before wearing your office shoes to prevent developing foot odor as well.
3) Use a sandals or flip flop with a secured strap or wrap around the ankle to prevent smudging your clothes from behind.
4) Wear the pair of shoes that matches your outfit only when you are at your destination.
Clothes:
1) Never where white bottoms as any splashes or streaks of dirt will show prominently. It’s best to wear dark shade bottoms to avoid this and also to prevent them going transparent when they get wet.
2) Jeans are comfortable to wear but they tend to get heavy when they get wet. If you must wear jeans the capris is a better choice.
3) Avoid synthetic fabric as they tend to cling to the body, trapping the humidity and heat. Instead, opt for cotton knits, which are porous and let your skin breathe.
4) Thin fabrics are comfortable but reveal all when wet. Select thicker fabrics like silk, poly-nylon and cotton blends, which will not crush. Jersey dresses, short shirt dresses and salwar kameezes in drip-dry fabrics are apt rainwear.
Make-up:
1) Always wear sunblock before going out in the morning even if you don’t see the sun out UV rays can still penetrate dark clouds and damage our skin. Try Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Complete UV Waterlight Lotion (P460) and the Ultra Sheer Complete UV Moisture (P460). Both have SPF 50, Helioplex technology that provides long-lasting UVA/UVB protection, and has Dry Touch technology that leaves a non-oily and non-sticky texture.
2) Wash and cleanse the face thoroughly and rub an ice cube on your face for 5 to 10 minutes to lower the sweating rate so that the makeup stays put for longer period of time.
3) Women with oily skin can use astringent while women with dry to normal skin can use toner after the ice to cool and refresh the skin.
4) Avoid foundation and prepare the base of your makeup using powder slightly.
5) Sheer film of light brown, beige, pastel or pink cream eye shadow can be used along with a think line of eyeliner and use a coat or two of waterproof mascara.
6) Soft matte lipsticks are preferable to most ladies during monsoons but you may use a soft brown or pink shade with sheer gloss.
7) Do not neglect to use water-based moisturizers during rainy season to keep away the oily skin, acne and water loss due to perspiration and sweating.
8 ) Keep your hairstyles simple and easy. Elaborate hairstyles are more difficult to manage and redo and limp damp hair do not look good with them. You may use bangs and layered hairstyles instead.
9) Bright jewelry is in vogue during monsoons but this is the minimalist year, so you may opt for stone studded light jewelry.
10) If you must you blush, keep it light and blend it well. Cream blush in shades of pink, peach and brown can be used.
11) During this time, keep your eyebrows in shape with threading and hair gel for you cannot use eyebrow pencil during a downpour.
Don’t forget to bring your umbrella or raincoat to keep you dry. Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and take vitamin C regularly to protect you from colds. Get a flu shot to prevent getting sick with influenza.
