In honor of the Philippines’ second saint, Eastwood Mall hosts the Pedro Calungsod Art Exhibit which opened today October 22, 2012 just right after his canonization yesterday October 21, 2012.
St. Pedro Calungsod exhibit, which will be shown until October 24, 2012, showcases over over 60 paintings and artwork from highly skilled Angono artists, who have interpreted Calungsod’s likeness and showed him doing his missionary work in the Marianas Islands. The theme of the exhibit is the “Evangelizing Presence of Filipinos in the World.” While the paintings display the artists’ individual styles and skills, all of them express Calungsod’s Filipino-ness and his dynamism.
The exhibit was produced as collaboration between the National Commission of the Canonization of Pedro Calungsod and several Angono artists’ groups like the Angono Ateliers Association, Angono Artists Association, the Neo-Angono Artists and the University of Rizal System-Angono.
Here’s some of the paintings you can see from the exhibit:
Pedro Calungsod with a Spanish Jesuit Missionary. Pedro Calungsod accompanied the missionaries to the Ladrones islands (later renamed the Marianas by the missionaries in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary) to help them in their mission to evangelize the Chamorros.
In the second painting, Pedro Calungsod also bears the bible and the crucifix as symbols of his mission to help Christianize the natives of the Ladrones islands.
I hope some of you can take time to visit the exhibit and instead of fighting for ownership over St. Pedro Calungsod original birthplace, let us all celebrate his canonization and recognition of another saint from the Philippines, our homeland.
