Taking Care of Cocktail Dresses

The beauty of short cocktail dresses is that they are designed to be sexy, and that often means that they are not that durable or robust. They tend to be made of thin materials, some of which may even be see-thru. If you wash them in the washing machine, these dresses could rip and tear just from the way that they wrap around the other, more durable clothes. They could also be torn up if they catch on the inside of the washing machine.

You will find that it is a much better idea to wash your dresses by hand. Fill the sink up with cold water so that the colors do not run. Add some soap to the water; you can use standard soap, but you are much better off to use detergent, which was designed to wash clothes and nothing else. Submerge the dress until it is entirely soaked through, and then slowly and gently start rubbing the fabric against itself with your hands. Move from one end of the dress to the other, and then come back, doing it the other direction. When you are done, drain the water and rinse the dress under a moderate flow from the tap.

You also do not want to throw these dresses in the dryer, where they could be ripped or shrunk. Instead, just take your dress outside and hang it on the line to dry. This takes longer, but it is much better for the material and makes it last.
