Reasons to Watch a Live Ballet Manila Performance #RevengeoftheClassics #WIWTD 97

“In Russia, families goes to watch a live ballet performance.  In the Philippines families goes to malls.  We would like to change that,” Lisa Macuja-Elizalde the country’s most profilic ballet.

Lisa Macuja started dancing when she was eight.  However, it was only when she turned 18 when she got immensely involved in ballet.   She recieved a scholarship from the USSR Ministry of Culture and was offered to study at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet (formerly known as Leningrad Choreographi Institute).  Graduated top of her class in 1984 she debuted as the prima ballerina in the Nutcraker, Don Quixote, and Giselle at the Mariinski Theater.   She was know then as the foreigner being the first foriegner to become part of Kirov Ballet. When she returned in the Philippines in 1986 she became the first artist-in-residence of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and guest artist at Ballet Philippines , the rest is history so they say.

I am a fan.

Ballet Manila 21st Season Performance #RevengeoftheClassics

I was very young when I remember seeing her and my first live ballet performance at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.  It was one of those family weekend we spent when CCP complex was  more than just a theme park and the mall culture isn’t a thing.

It was such a pleasure to finally see another live ballet performance, albeit just a preview of the full show.  I was invited to watch a preview of Ballet Manila Revenge of the Classic show that will be showing at the Aliw Theater in Pasay this August 2016.

Goosebumps all over when I saw them perform the Rose Waltz, an excerpt from full length ballet The Nutcracker, it was mezmerizing and was like a dream.  Then I was floored when they did the Rose Adagio, an excerpt from the full length ballet Sleeping Beauty and the Don Quuixote Grand Pas De Duex .  The discipline, the grace, the beautiful performance was simply breath taking.

It was my first time to see a modern ballet choreograhed by Martin Lawrence. Rebel: EDSA 30 is a ore nationalistic approach to the characters and events from the People Power Revolution.  It was unexpected and emotional.

I am disappointed with myself for not watching as many ballet as I could, it was just not one of my priorities.  But now that I’ve seen it again, I will be going back to watch the full length shows again.  Why?

Here are my reasons for watching a live Ballet Manila Performance.

  1. I want to show my support to the performing arts in the Philippines.  We have really good artist in the country but they are very much neglected .  Do we really have to send them away before we see their worth?
  2. Seeing a live ballet manila performance may inspire you to take on a class , not to be a performer or why not right?  But the discipline behind this art is so admirable.  I think everyone should learn ballet to learn discipline, patience and hard work in its essence. You may try to enroll at Lisa Macuja School of Ballet Manila they now have a branch in Fischer Mall in Quezon City.
  3. If you buy right now you can get all 4 season shows and get 50% off total price.  Normally ticket prices for Gold Section is Php1,500 each and regular is Php6,000.  Get it now and get all four shows for Php3,000 only!  Good deal!
