It was my first time to have a tour with Carlos Celdran so when Lido Cocina Tsina extended an invitation for a walking tour at Downtown Manila (a.k.a. Chinatown in Manila / Binondo / Escolta / Sta. Cruz) I had a little hestitation but decided to go anyway. I just thought Downtown Manila is part of the Philippines rich history and culture, and having to see the place with an expert to guide us, it should be more interesting than what I already know from a previous visit at the area, especially on a Chinese New Year!
Here’s what can you see at Downtown Manila
PLACE OF FAITH
Binondo Church
Sta Cruz Church
Great Wall of Chinatown
Here is where you will find the cross being honored with an incense. A cross of Buddihsm and Catholicsm since Buddihsm is not a religion you can actually mix it with any religion
.
FOOD STOPS
Best Lumpia in Town
It is hidden inside the Uy Su Bin Building where you can find original Chinese building/ architecture. You need to find the New Po Heng Lumpia House signage along the street then go pass by the narrow hallway , at the end is the carrinderia where the lumpia is sold.
Life Changing Fried Siopao
By Shangai Fried Siopao for Php18.00 only! It is actually a cross of siomai and siopao. It taste really good and price is really affordable!
Best Hopia in Town
Of course at Eng Bee Tin, the house of many flavored hopia just by the archway
Original Lido Cocina Tsina House and their famous Pork Asado
The building was actually demolished for some issues. But the signage is there Lido Cocina Tsina is celebrating it’s 80 years in the Philippines with 18 branches in the country. It was the original Panciteria Lido built in 1936 the one built in 1945 is totally different. This is actually what we came for, or well they were the one who spearheaded this tour. Thank you!
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
Eskinita de Escolta
Carlos described it as how the Manila city streets should be narrow and diverse and thriving. Well at least the place does not stink and the streets are clean.
Places to buy Lucky Charms and Crystals
Chinese are known for Feng Shui and those who practice and believe it uses different kinds of charms and crystals for different wishes and aspirations in life. This is the street to be. Plus you can also see in this area where the original Printing Press was .
