A few days ago we watched the advanced screening of Mamma Mia Here We Go Again, the sequel to Mamma Mia. If you’ve been following my Instagram I now have a regular movie date/partner Marcus who knows more about making movies (producer and director), being in it (actor) and writing it (scriptwriter). Because of that I have decided to include his opinion about the movies we watch together so as to have a balanced point of view (POV) from a male and female and an expert and an enthusiast.
The first movie we decided to review together is Mamma Mia, Here We Go Again.
HER POV
I liked the first one so I did want to watch the second one. But Marcus didn’t want to but he went anyway to support me. I am so glad to learn that after watching the movie he actually liked it.
Personally, my female POV I loved the movie, stoey telling is more fluid, the characters are more engaging, the shots were very pretty Instagrammable and there are more songs than the first one.
It is such a feel good movie, the kind of movie we all need to see these days, especially the gloomy, rainy depressing weather. I also think Mamma Mia Here we go again is better than the first one. I loved how they are able to keep all the original characters together, plus added more interesting ones that you can relate to.
The first few minutes of the movie was a bit confusing especially the transition from the past and present as it was hard to tell who is who, but later on you will get it so it was nice.
I recommend this movie, a great chic flick for the whole family .
HIS POV
I did not want to watch this movie. The first one was ok. I’m not really an Abba fan. More of an Abba acquaintance. So why did I watch it? Well, I did, that’s all that matters. Straight off the bat I was rolling my eyes.
SLOILER ALERT: Meryl Streep’s character is dead. You are going to make a sequel and not include your biggest star? I smell touble. Like the first, all songs are Abba songs, and like I said, I can barely spell Abba, much less name thier songs, but I was surprised I was able to sing along with most of them. A few songs I never heard of, but I’m sure the die hards would love those.
The story bounces between past and present…watching the mother shack up with the three potential fathers…and we all know what will happen, but it was still fun to watch and see the young versions of the old guys we saw in the first movie…which were also surprisingly absent from this movie, save Pierce Brosnon. I guess he signed the contract before talking to the other actors. Andy Garcia has a nice little role..and you just know something special is going to happen with him. So I am kind of liking the movie, much to my displeasure, and it is getting to the end and..bam!
Everything I said in the first part of this review was wrong, except for the Andy Garcia special moment thing. Totally corny and mushy, but very fulfilling, ending to a fun movie. If you want to score points with your lady, you will be able to sit through this.
Movie runs for about one hour 54 minutes.
