In the Philippines, former President Fidel V. Ramos signed Presidential Proclamation No. 711 declaring the third week of January as Autism Consciousness Week. The proclamation aims to promote awareness on autism and the provision of appropriate socials services to persons with autism.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how an individual interprets what he sees, hears, touches and tastes, thereby, impairing understanding and use of language and his adaptation to his environment. Autism is not curable but is treatable, especially if the child is diagnosed and receives intervention early in life. With special education and therapy, most children with autism, can be trained to be self-reliant and productive members of society.
Autism spectrum disorder affects individual differently at varying degrees. This is why early detection of autism is very important because a child should undergo specialized intervention programs at the earliest possible time.
Some of the early manifestations of autism in children are: no pointing by 1 year, no babbling by 1 year, no single word by 16 months; no 2-word phrases by 24 months; any loss of language skills at any time; little or no eye contact; no response when called by name and indifference to others.
The common symptoms of autism spectrum disorder in older kids include difficulty mixing with other children; acts as deaf; resists learning; no fear of real dangers; resist change in routine; uses people as tools; inappropriate laughing and giggling; not cuddly; marked physical over-activity; no eye contact; spins objects, sustained odd play; destructive and aggressive at times; and aloof, standoffish manner.
Experts suggest that if a child manifests at least seven of these signs, the child should be brought to developmental pediatrician for diagnosis.
