I just watched the rerun of this movie at QTV11 tonight and it breaks my heart to pieces. It was supposedly a feel good romance comedy movie but I felt sad.
Here’s some of the lines in the movie read and maybe you can see why I felt sad:
Henry: I have to be honest with you. l’m a bit out of practice with this.
Rose: I want you to feel comfortable. That’s important to me.
Henry: I want to tell you upfront. l’m not interested in sex.
Rose: You’re not?
Henry: And it has nothing to do with you. It has to do with what you were talking about in your class.
I, too, believe it’s illusions about love and the emphasis on sex — that separate people today. As you said, romance is a myth.
Rose: I was referring to academic opinions that are purely subjective.
Henry: You were right! Relationships based on romantic love are worthless.
Rose: Did you stay for my whole class?
Henry: I left when you mentioned the music we hear when lovers kiss in films.
It is manipulative! ln real life, we don’t hear music when we kiss.
And the person you’re with isn’t a movie star. It’s a malicious …
Rose: Fantasy? Is it all right if I sit down for a minute?
The addiction to beauty and perfection created by advertising –
– feeds on people’s pathetic hopes. They don’t have their own opinions.
The media tells us what’s beautiful.
TV shows tell us what a relationship is supposed to be like. And sex!
I don’t even want to tell you how that’s ruined my life …
Well, l go crazy.
When l want someone sexually, I go out of my mind.
Do you remember that film where the woman kills the bunny?
Rose: ”Fatal Attraction”? Granted, it was a film.
But l understand how she felt. Not that l would kill an animal, –
– but l know the feeling of wanting someone so much that it hurts.
This fiction, known as love, drives people crazy, as you said.
– Then you’re either mad, alone … – Or dead. But that was fiction.
Right! We’re dead!
l do believe two people can come together, even marry, –
– for reasons more concrete than sex.
A love that grows out of respect, love, trust, common interest.
Have you noticed that friendships last longer than marriages?
Rose: I apologize. I settled for something that I didn’t want. l thought l could live with that. But l lied, to myself and to you.
Rose: What did you mean by, you must have loved me but didn’t know it?
– l’d like an answer.
Alex: You were different then.
Rose: How could you have loved me then?
Alex: l loved you for who you were.
Rose: So now you want who l am because l’m not who l was any more?
Alex: Rose, what?
Rose: l have dreamt about this moment from the first day we met.
l’ve played out what you’d say and what you’d think a million times.
– But you were better in my head. – Maybe l’ve had too much to drink.
lt’s not you, it’s me. l don’t feel anything. lsn’t that great?
l never thought about my feelings, only yours.
– l didn’t think l was good enough.
Alex: Oh, but you are!
Rose: l know. But Alex, you’re not good enough for me.
Rose: …because while it lasts, it feels really great!

@ Dinah I think the concept of it’s not you it’s me thing in this movie is that when people dump other people it doesn’t necessarily mean there is something wrong with the one being dumped it’s just the person dumping realized that she wants something else and not what the person she was dumping has to offer.
oh, I wish I have seen this movie.
I have never understood the concept behind the lines, its not you, its me. I mean, is the person saying this trying to be nice or does he or she really feels that there is something wrong with him or her? Hmm.
