A livelihood project for a great cause hitting more than two birds in one stone, this is what I think the Gawad Kalinga Sunshineville livelihood program Bayong ng Kabuhayan is doing, empowering women, end poverty, and saving the environment.
I was ecstatic getting the invite from Nuffnang Philippines to visit the GK Sunshineville and have the opportunity to see first hand the people behind this fashionable green product.
I fell in love with the women and the bag the first time I met them.
THE WOMEN and GK SUNSHINEVILLE LAS PINAS
The women were so friendly and excited to see us. They are so proud at what they are doing and they are very confident entertaining guest.
Take Maria for example, the woman who made my custom made red clutch bag. She used to live in the slums and life was uncomfortable to them before. But after being a beneficiary of one of the 92 houses at the Phase 1 of the GK Sunshineville in Las Piñas, a place they used to call Looban inside the upscale BF Homes subdivision, life has been better.
When they were still living in the slums men in the neighborhood would have drinking sessions and the women are playing binggo and the kids are all over the place. The neighborhood was untidy and very unsightly. But now they take care of their place, the men and women work, and the kids are all neat.
THE BAYONG NG KABUHAYAN
At first I thought they were sprayed with metalic silver paint but I was wrong it was the wrong side of the doypack (packaging used for ready to drink beverages like Zesto, Big 250 and the like). I was more impressed because it was very environment friendly.
It was a real labor of love, each will be paid for each product they make. Maria made the customized clutch bag for me and I am so happy that she made some income during our visit. I am so proud to use the bag she made for me and I am very proud to wear the Bayong ng Kabuhayan and I don’t intend to remove the tag that identifies the bag as made by the women of GK Sunshineville and that it is a Re-use Green Product meant to save the poor and save the environment.
