This year’s Chinese New Year is very special because aside from being a New Year its also a Valentines Day. I’m sure some of you have their plans all ready for the big day, February 14, 2010 as this is a double day celebration and for Earthlingorgeous.com a triple celebration as I will launch my 2nd Blogversary same day.
Anyway, everyone could use some good luck here and there. Here are the top 10 things you can do to bring good luck at your side, according to Chinese superstitions.
1. Stay Away From Sweeping.
What's Inside
This is one of those days you can sit back and relax as sweeping the floors and cleaning the house is strictly forbidden. It is believed that cleaning means you are also sweeping off of your good luck out .
2. Spring Clean Before The New Year
You don’t want to welcome the New Year with a messy home so before you can enjoy not cleaning the house on the day it self it is suggested that you should do a full spring cleaning.
3. Buy Books Before The New Year
Books is a homonym for “lose” in Cantonese so most bookstores, especially those owned by Chinese will surely be closed.
4. Don’t Buy New Shoes
Shoes is a homonym for “rough” in Cantonese. To make sure you will have a smooth sailing year avoid buying shoes over the holiday period to make sure you avoid rough seas in the New Year.
5. Pay Your Debts
The Chinese believed that your year will end the same way it started. So make sure to pay money you owe so that you will start debt free.
6. No Ghost Stories
Sharing ghostly experiences, death, dying or the like is considered supremely inauspicious during the Chinese New Year so its best to avoid such conversations.
7. Paint The Town Red
Red is considered the color of luck and the ultimate luck bringer in Chinese. Don’t mind if they call you mushy this Valentines it will bring you good luck anyway.
8. Tolerate Your Sweet Tooth
Eating candies and other sweet stuff is very much tolerated on a Chinese New Year as it is believed to bring you a sweet year.
9. Let The Wind Blow
Welcome in the New Year with a blast of fresh air, opening your windows is said to let in good luck.
10. No Pointy Stuff
Pack away all the sharp objects in your house like knives and scissors as they are believed to be harbingers of bad luck as their sharp points cut out your good luck. Avoid going to a salon or hairdressers as you’ll have your good luck chopped off too.
If you are Chinese I bet you already know them, if you are not it won’t hurt to try. However, prayers and a deep connection with the creator will always bring your blessings in your life.
