Is Fashion Sense Inborn, Acquired, Or Privilege?

Summer themed event. Oh! what to wear? Florals? Stripes? Earth tones? Help!

Every time there is an event I have to attend with a dress code I always end up in a fashion dilemma because I don’t know what to wear. Although my closet is overflowing with clothes old and new stuff I haven’t even worn yet, I still end up saying “I don’t have anything to wear!”

I know I have good pieces lying around, some I only used a couple of times. Sometimes when I leave, especially for an event I want to wear something I haven’t worn before or something I haven’t been photographed at. Yeah I know my vainness! But because of that I wish I was one of those people who are very talented with mixing and matching clothes to make it appear as an entirely new piece of wardrobe.

Which leads me to a question is fashion sense inborn, an acquired skill or privilege?

How many fashion designer schools do I have to attend so I won’t have this fashion dilemma? Do I have to attend fashion designing schools to acquire such fashionable flair or can I acquire the skill by sitting back at home and have the fashion channel on as much as I can, hog all the fashion magazines I can find until “fashion sense” is imbibed in me?

Or is it a privilege of the few because they have the resources (money, influence, work) to be fashionable and stay fashionable all the time. But we do know that there are fashion hits and miss too.

But how come some people, even if they are not rich, doesn’t work in the industry, doesn’t have the influence and stuff manage to keep a fashionable sense and flair.

I have to admit my fashion sense when I was younger makes no sense at all. But someone told me its because I was not that exposed to TV, fashion shows, malls, magazines and computer back then and the only influence on style I have was very limited to my environment.

But I have to admit studying a school for fashion designers like the School of Fashion and Arts (SoFA) can help you look at the right track. But I guess it takes more than one session but a dozen or more fashion design classes I need to attend to widen my horizon.

Now… what shall I wear for tomorrow’s event again? Its a summer themed event again and I am caught between florals, stripes, or earth tones? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Dress codes. You have to love them or hate them.
