Retro Looks Making a Comeback for Spring Menswear

This spring’s catwalks feature models strutting around in looks that are decidedly retro. Many of these updated classics are highly fashionable and take menswear to the next level. Still, many more have fashion critics scratching their heads, wondering just what designers are thinking this season. Why bring back socks and sandals? Read on to discover what trends add to a man’s sophistication and which may have him coming across as someone too lazy to remove his socks.

Men Retro Wear

Bomber Jackets
Do you often find yourself reminiscing high school glory days? Bring some of what was cool back theninto the now by sporting a trendy new bomber jacket. Bomber jackets were originally designed for aviators, especially those in the military. Their warmth and durability spread to high schools across the nation and became the go-to jacket for athletes. Fashion just couldn’t stay away from this unique look, but this spring marks the most popular these jackets have been since the 1980’s.

Double Denim
Double denim has been so universally hated it’s a complete shock that this look is back for the spring season. Back in the 1990’s, the “Jeremy Clarkson Effect” caused dramatic dips in the sale of denim. Simply because English broadcaster, Jeremy Clarkson, wore double denim, then all of the world’s fashion consciously decided they wouldn’t be wearing jeans anymore. The reaction to Clarkson’s style choices were a bit over the top, but happened none-the-less and not too long ago either. Top designers promise that the new double denim looks are less hillbilly and more style savvy than they were in decade’s past.

Socks and Sandals
Most men would scoff at the idea of wearing socks with their sandals. Sandals are for bare feet! Still, designers, Prada and Agi & Sam, strutted this silly look down the runway. On trend for this spring are socks and sandals. Be prepared to track in a lot more sand than usual when it sticks to the fibers of your white knee socks. With so many websites dedicated to humiliating those brave enough to sport this look, it’s a wonder that anyone would consider this a trendy new look.

Metallic
Unlike some of the other looks listed here, the metallic look is one we’re happy to see re-emerging. Metallics haven’t been In since the 1980’s, but they’re back and they’re looking better than ever. Pair metallic silver jackets with Brooks Brothers Sport Shirts for an incredibly stylish new look. Burberry presented their metallic looks on their spring catwalk in all of its shimmering glory. Get your hands on a metallic bomber jacket and you’ll be spring style ready.

Animal Prints
All of the biggest fashion houses showcased animal prints in one aspect or another. Animal prints are the premier look for spring. Not since the hair bands of the 80’s and 90’s has there been this much leopard and snakeskin. Unlike the days of old, current animal print trends are much more sophisticated. Famed musician, Bobby Gillespie, has been photographed in sophisticated Saint Laurent leopard prints paired with a tailored blazer.

Should You Go Retro This Spring?
Not all of these looks are bad. If you have the funds and can afford top designers, maybe you’d look great in socks and sandals. Chances are, you’re not that rich and that look just isn’t going to fly in the workplace. Certain retro looks just don’t have their place in everyday modern society, but be happy to see bomber jackets, animal prints, and metallics back this spring. Those are looks anyone can pull off.
