While I have no personal issues with regards to child bearing and fertility, I have a lot of friends who are facing this difficulty. When I was invited by Merck Serono to attend a fertility workshop for their Fertility Awareness Week 2013 campaign, I did not hesitate but attend. I want to understand my friends and impart to them the knowledge I will get from that seminar and tell everyone, there is Hope for Starting Families.
Some people can be very insensitive and mean by asking why would couples want to go through all this trouble of having their own child. They said there are so many abandoned children in this world in foundations who are waiting for someone to adopt them. Why won’t they just adopt? While that is a humane and another option for having a child and start a family. This is actually not the issue here. Child bearing and child raring by married couples or partners who decided they want to have their own blood child is more of a psychological and emotional battle.
To give you a better understanding of this battle couples face, here is a very short and very touching video I’d like to share to everyone. I suggest you all watch it, it is very enlightening.
- Infertility affects 1 in 10 couples and prevents the opportunity to build families across the globe.
- Asia has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world.
- 1 in 10 Filipino couples are suffering from infertility, according to a survey commissioned by Merck Serono and conducted by Synovate in 2011 among 100 households in the Philippines (GMA, Cebu, Davao) in the A, B and Upper C segments. Infertility incidence breakdown in cities surveyed: GMA 10.7%, Cebu 3.8%, Davao 5%
- There are two types of infertility. 1) Primary Infertility: A condition or challenge experienced by the couple with conceiving or maintaining pregnancy. No successful pregnancies or miscarriage. 2) Secondary Infertility: Secondary Infertility is the inability to conceive again after bearing the first child.
- Infertility is a disease that can be treated.
- Treatment cost will cover everything until the couple gets a successful pregnancy!
This is just a few of the facts I’ve learned. There were so many questions we were able to tackle in the workshop like:
- What are the option a couple can undertake to battle infertility?
- Where is the best place to get a work-up / treatment for their infertility issues in the Philippines?
- How much is the cost of fertility work-up?
- Success rate of in vitro fertilization?
- Answers to the Myths,Misconceptions and Barriers to fertility.
If you want to get the answers to these questions and more please join s Merck Serono wit Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (Aspires) and the Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology& Infertility (PSREI) will be hosting the Fertility Awareness Week starting August 25-30, 2013 with the theme Hope for Starting Families.

Stay gorgeous everyone!
