I get asked these questions a lot.
- How to be a beauty blogger and what does it take to be one?
- Does a beauty blogger have to be pretty?
- Do you have to be a makeup artist to become a makeup reviewer?
- Do I have to attend makeup schools to become a legit beauty blogger?
While some of these question made me chuckle, especially question #2, some of them are innocent questions being asked by readers, fans and fellow bloggers who wants to dive in the glamorous and expensive world of beauty/makeup blogging. Let me answer these questions one-by-one.
#1 How to be a beauty blogger and what does it take to be one?
First of all you should be passionate about makeup and cosmetics. To be able to survive the daily grind of reviewing one makeup item after another you must really love doing it and not just because you have to. You see with so many beauty products and brands you can try and review it gets a bit tiring at times. After all you only have one face to try everything on. It takes a lot of time and patience as you have to take product shots, swipe the products before taking a photo of how you use it or how to use it. You also must alot time for makeup reviews. It all starts with love. You should also have to invest on it. Most of the beauty bloggers you know started with buying the products they want to try out until the brands started to notice them and send them products to try out for free. Being called a beauty blogger didn’t happen overnight. We worked for it. I guess all my beauty blogger friends will agree that we didn’t start a beauty blog or started reviewing cosmetics just to get free makeup, we did it because we liked (or maybe dislike the product) that we wanted to tell the world about it. It is up to our readers disgretion if they believe us to actually buy the product or forget about it.
#2 Does a beauty blogger have to be pretty?
Beauty is subjective. What one percieves as pretty may not be pretty to someone else. But I do agree on my standards that all my beauty blogger friends are beautiful and pretty.
Let’s just say that when you like pretty things you become it. Or let me say that since you blog about beauty you should also live it. You just need to be presentable enough and know how to use your products. After all makeup is there to enhance your natural beauty, some are just skillful enough to use it to transform themselves to become a different person. Remember that famous meme #makeuptransformation? This one is the classic example:
#3 Do you have to be a makeup artist to become a makeup reviewer?
No. You just need to know the basic skills to be able to know how to apply and where to apply and tell people your honest opinion based on your experience. You should also know basic concerns on makeup like wearability, finishes, and the like. You don’t have to be a makeup artist unless you want to make it your profession. I myself am not a makeup artist I am just an enthusiast. While I have attemded several workshops and classes and course I still don’t call myself a makeup artist. But all of the bloggers I mentioned above are certified makeup artist and do it as a profession.
#4 Do I have to attend makeup schools to become a legit beauty blogger?
No. Like what I said earlier you just have to have the passion, skills and basic knowledge in makeup and application. Only if you want to make it as profession and become a legit makeup artist that you attend a makeup school. If you want to there are several makeup schools in the country you can try just like Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry they offer certificate classes for different makeup practices and profession like Bridal, Fashion, Special Effects and the like.
I hope I answered your concerns about beauty blogging. If you have more questions just leave it at the comment section below and I’ll get back at you as soon as I can.
Stay gorgeous everyone!

Love and Hugs from India 🙂
I think it’s really important to have the passion for the niche because let’s face it, how much shades of makeup can we really stomach in a lifetime? Also, I think to be a responsible beauty blogger, you have to live your craft. That’s where you gain the expertise, or at the very least, the tried and tested opinions that will make you blog matter to those who read.
This is such a share-able post for newbie bloggers who’d want to do beauty blogging. Best tip: “First of all you should b passionate about makeup and cosmetics.” AGREE! 🙂
Glad you find this post useful Justin!
