The diet industry is booming, and the public is regularly encouraged to try this diet or that diet. Even more so in the early part of the year. Whether your healthy New Year’s resolutions are still going strong or not, it’s always worth exploring your options.
In the past decade we’ve had the Atkins, the Dukan and even a diet that is determined by the way your face looks! This year, everyone is talking about the 5:2 diet, aka ‘intermittent fasting’. It all kicked off back in August 2012 when a BBC Horizon documentary called Eat, Fast and Live Longer presented by Dr Michael Mosley hit our TV screens.
Since then, Dr Mosley has written a book with journalist Mimi Spencer called The Fast Diet – it’s a pun, you see – that has received universal press coverage from The Times to The Guardian. Famous foodie faces like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall are trying, testing and writing about it.
The beauty of this regime is that it claims to offer health benefits other than weight loss, including reduced risk of disease and the chance of a longer life. The NHS has just got round to releasing an article on the subject, gently reminding us that there is little evidence that this is the case, though they wouldn’t like to rule it out. So the jury is still out. But many who have tried fasting report feeling healthy and alert, as well as trimmer.
Whether it’s worthwhile in the long run remains to be seen and it’s certainly safer to go with a more traditional regime of healthy diet and regular exercise. If you’re a fan of keeping up with the trends then how about investing in a new pair of skinny jeans? It’s obviously important to feel good but looking good at the same time doesn’t hurt. Head to the high street or choose from the skinny jeans at Very.co.uk to help keep you looking stylish, even if your new diet doesn’t work out.
Stay gorgeous everyone!
