“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This adage has been around for more than 100 years, and it still applies today. Many people, especially women, struggle with confidence and self-respect partly due to the fact of who and what is on every ad, commercial, fragrance poster, and magazine cover; skinny models nearly six feet tall. For the past ten or more years, there has been a trend and a fight against the cookie cutter shape of what Hollywood wants women to look like.
With more high-profile models like Ashley Graham, they are leading the fight to make room for every woman. It will never benefit a brand name clothing store to limit the number size of the clothes, or only have specific models posing in their ads. Women who cannot fit that size will create their brand, or there could be a boycott. Remember what happened to Abercrombie and Fitch and the CEO? Brand names are harder to keep around these days with an oversaturated market of fashion names.
It is more of an ironic thing. Music and movies teach women to be themselves and empower yourself as a woman, but their top paid celebrities and models all look very similar and almost laughably identical. There is not only a lack of diversity, but a lack of shape and height to name a few. More high-profile fashion companies, fashion shows, and magazines are moving toward a diverse viewing of all different types of women by promoting body positivity and acceptance to all.
If there are nearly 8 billion people on the planet and half women, 4 billion women of all different shapes, sizes, colors, and body frames are walking around. Why would one of the most profitable sectors in the whole world, the fashion industry, only market to just a few thousand? Why not expand the concepts and theories that clothes are only for a specific woman?
In the fashion realm, there is not one designer for all. There are countless designers for all sorts of clothing options and accessories. Their target audience should have all women in mind. On the runway, the representation of minorities, disabilities, and plus-size women need to be at the forefront. The vast array of designers needs to keep this mind when making a new garment or seasonal trend.
